Windows

The Windows version of ConstructMap can be installed from the BEAR website: http://bearcenter.berkeley.edu/GradeMap/download

The full system is a large file (23 MB). A fast Internet connection (DSL, LAN, T1) is recommended to download the file. The update files, which require a previous installation of Java 2, is smaller (11 MB) and can be downloaded more quickly.

IMPORTANT: If you have data that you wish to save from an earlier version of ConstructMap, please export it before performing an update. After installing the ConstructMap update, you can then import the data and continue working with it. (NOTE: The first time you start a new version of ConstructMap, the program will automatically detect the most recently active project and update the file structure for the new version).

  • For the full system (includes Java 2 v1.6.0), select cm44_init.exe.
  • For the updates only (does not include Java 2), select cm44_update.exe.

Click the Open button to begin the installation process.

If you see a warning notice that you already have Java 2 installed, DO NOT select the UNINSTALL option; this message simply indicates that you already have the correct version of Java installed on that computer and you do not need to install it again.

You can go back and forth to make changes to any of the selections from steps 1 through 4 below. The software will not actually be installed until step 5.

  1. You will first see the Setup Wizard screen. Click Next to continue with the installation.
  2. By default, the system will try to install to the C:\Program Files\ConstructMap44 folder. Under most conditions, accept this default and click Next to continue.
  3. By default, the system will install ConstructMap shortcuts to your default Start Menu folder. This enables the ConstructMap program to be available from the Start button. If you do not want this feature, check the box: Don't create a Start Menu folder at the bottom left of the window. In either case, click Next to continue with the installation.
  4. By default, an icon to launch the program will be placed on your desktop. If you do not want the desktop icon, deselect Create a desktop icon. If you would like to create a quick launch icon next to your Start button, select Create a Quick Launch icon. In either case, click Next to continue with the installation.
  5. You will be presented with a summary screen, shown in Figure 1, to check before the installation is executed. Click Install to continue or on Back to make changes.

  6. After the installation is complete you have the option of starting the ConstructMap program and viewing the Quick Start Guide. Deselect those options you do not want to start automatically after the installation, and then click Finish to exit the installation program.

Mac OS X

The Mac OS X version of ConstructMap can be installed from the BEAR website: http://bearcenter.berkeley.edu/GradeMap/download

Your operating system requires Java version 1.4.1 or later for the ConstructMap software to run. You can find out the version of Java you have on your system by opening up a terminal window from the desktop and typing “java –version”. If the build version is prior to 1.4.1, then you should update Java using the Mac updating service. First, update your Mac operating system to 10.2.3 or later (refer to http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25367 for more information).

  • Click on the cm44_mac.zip file at the website. Your system will automatically unzip and install the ConstructMap program into the ConstructMap folder within the Applications folder and place it on your desktop.
  • Launch the ConstructMap application in the ConstructMap folder within the Applications folder to execute the program.

Updates

When you install a ConstructMap update (i.e., a new version) the system will attempt to restore the project that was active when you last closed ConstructMap. We recommend that before installing the update (even before downloading it from the website) you save your data in a project folder (File - Save As).

To install the ConstructMap update:

  1. Go to http://bearcenter.berkeley.edu/GradeMap/download
  2. Left-click on the gmxx_update.exe (e.g., cm44_update.exe) filename to initiate the installation process (alternatively, you could right-click on it and select Save Target As to download the file to your computer and then double-click on it to start the installation locally).
  3. Mac users should install the gmxx_mac.zip file.

  4. After the installation is complete, the first time you start ConstructMap the ConstructMap Update dialog window will be displayed, as shown the figure above.
    • Select Yes to let ConstructMap convert your last project to the new ConstructMap format.
    • Select No if you wish to import a project yourself. ConstructMap will start up with an empty project window.
    • Select Cancel if you do not want to start the new version of ConstructMap.
